Background
Given how important working memory is, we don't know much about it. Several brain regions are involved, and dopamine, the reward neurotransmitter, has been shown to play a major role. The current model shows separate processors for visual and audio inputs, with an executive manager juggling their contents. An exercise called Dual n-Back, which requires both audio and visual responses, has been shown to improve not only working memory but fluid intelligence, or know-how, as well. Working memory training also improves delay discounting, our
inclination to engage in risky behaviour when negative consequences are
far in the future. Unfortunately, such "games" are really tiring and not fun to do.
Games in which the player has to act against a clock while remembering several things at once, however, have also been shown to improve working memory, and there are a few of these around. References
