Background
Spatial attention is known to be associated with math skills. In a study comparing the spatial attention abilities of regular video-game players with non-players, the players were clearly superior. These games require quick, targeted reactions within a realistic 3D immersive gamespace. When the non-players played the game for 10 hours, they significantly improved in spatial attention. A copycat study found that college aged women, who placed below
male non-players at first in spatial attention, were able to catch up to them, also
after 10 hours of playing the game.
Medal of Honor, a war game, was used in the study based strictly on its popularity. I have tried to find non-violent games that are fun and make the same basic demands on the player, and have found two that require 360 degree awareness but lack the 3D aspect, so they may only be partially effective.
